Edmond August Sodergren was a child of four years when he made the six week trip to the United States. August, as he was known, left home at about the age of 14, and walked the distance to Wayland, IA, having to ford the Skunk River on his way. There he made his home with his uncle, Carl Sodergren, and family, working in Carl's carriage and wagon shop, thus learning the arts of carpentry.
On the third of April, 1904, he married Carrie Hauenstein, the daughter of John and Gertrude Hoffmeier Hauenstein who farmed a couple miles northwest of Olds, Iowa. They lived with Carrie's parents for a time, then purchased a farm of their own NE of Olds. In 1923 August and Carrie had their farm sale and moved to the town of Olds with their two daughters.
For several years after that August worked for Henry Co. Maintenance Crew running a road grader. He later worked for the Spahn and Rose Lumber Co. in Olds, building almost everything, including hog houses, loading chutes, pick-up racks, fed bunks, and even ox-yokes, although they were nearly a thing of the past at that time.
