Charles John Elmer Sodergren was the firstborn of John and Hannah Sodergren, and he spent the first 7 years of his life in his native land, Sweden, after which he made the journey to this country in 1880 with his parents.

Reference is made in the Fairfield Public Library of Charles and two of his sisters attending school at the new building at Four Corners, finished in 1890. They were 3 of the 56 pupils listed for the 1890-91 school year. The pupils ranged in age from 5 to 21 years. Photo of the schoolhouse as it stands today

On March 18, 1896 the following article appeared in the Fairfield Ledger: FOUND BURIED TREASURE

For more than a quarter of a century Jacob Schultze made his home on a little farm near Glendale. He led a lonely and retired life, was almost miserly in his habits, and it was generally supposed was possessed of considerable money. When Mr. Schultze died about a year ago, the heirs to his estate were unable to find his money, and a report arose that it was buried on the farm. The place was sold to Miss Mary Damm, and was recently leased to Charles Sodergren. While the latter was repairing a stable a few days ago he discovered a tin can containing $500 in gold and greenbacks. Mr. Sodergren notified administrator Main of Burlington to his find, and the latter took possession of the money as part of the estate. It is said that the deeds under which Miss Damm took possession of the farm conveyed to her not only the real estate, but all personal property thereon, and that she will make claim to the money found by Sodergren.

Charles and Mary Alice (Mayme) Fry (Powers, adopted name) of Keokuk were married in 1904 in Burlington and and spent their married life in that city where Charles worked as a machinist for the Murry Iron Works.

The couple found their resting place at Memorial Park Cemetary in Burlington, Iowa.
